About Friends of Horfield Common

Picture
Friends of Horfield Common (FOHC) started in 2006 when a group of neighbours and interested residents decided to work together to ensure continued access to, availability of, and improvement of the state of Horfield Common. Friends of Horfield Common works in partnership with Bristol City Council and other interested organisations and groups.

During 2009 FOHC organised a range of social and fundraising activities which included:

A sponsored walk around the Ardagh Sports club to raise funds for a new bench
A working party to mend the fencing around The Ardagh Sports facilities
Removal of dead trees and coppicing.
Clearance of the ditch and pond areas.
The first annual FOHC Summer Picnic
Installation of a new bench and planting of new trees to replace trees which have died
Installation of new 'dog bin' and rubbish bins
Repair of the concrete posts on the edge of the car park

Last year saw a significant increase in FOHCs campaigning activity, following the publication of the Area Green Space Plan (AGSP) by Bristol City Council in June 2010. After a highly successful Second Annual FOHC Summer Picnic in the week that that consultation documents for the AGSP were published we facilitated several events to discuss the plans with local people, users of the Bowling Club and Tennis Courts and other local groups. These kicked off with a "Picnic for the Parks" in Wellington Hill Playing Field on 17th July to raise awareness of the proposals, followed by an Open meeting on 28th July and another on 3rd September. We hosted a visit from a member of the Council Cabinet on September 14th.

FOHC holds regular meetings at Ardagh Sports Club which are well-attended by a wide range of representatives and individuals from a large-number of groups who use the common, local residents and other interested parties which have included Bristol City Council, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Monks Park School, Local Anti-Graffiti groups, Tesco and local Neighbourhood Watch groups.

Please see the front page for information about what is happening in 2011.

How to join FOHC

Joyce Coleman

Picture
Joyce Coleman was a founder member of FOHC, having been a lifelong local resident, allotment holder, dog walker and wonderful neighbour.

Joyce was thrilled to be asked to come and open our new FOHC park bench which was a lovely celebration of our inaugural success in getting FOHC up and running and beginning to raise funds for the improvement of the Common for enjoyment by everybody.

Joyce, as FOHCs oldest member, joined Stanley, as FOHCs youngest member to cut the ribbon & the fantastic cake baked by our Chair, Kay Thomson.

Joyce passed away in 2009 and is much missed and fondly remembered by FOHC.
