Horfield Common Children's Play Area Refurbishment :: The final design is here! - 10 March 2014
This is the final design plan for the new children's play area on Horfield Common.
The project manager has provided this commentary on the revised design:
"The scheme has been revised to retain the existing hard surfacing and to ensure the proposed fence retains clear access between the new play area and adjacent property boundaries as requested during public consultation. Cost constraints have prevented us fencing any wider area than shown. Public consultation didn’t support provision of the teen area and expressed concern about providing a zip wire which it felt would attract older youths. As a consequence and in order to find cost savings to meet the retention of the hard paving both these items have been omitted from the scheme. Budget constraints have prevented us from providing any further requested changes to the scheme which we believe will provide an excellent new play facility."
We have been advised that construction of the new play area will begin on April 7th - Hooray!
We can't wait to see this long-awaited facility open for 'play business' asap!
**New HC Play Area update - received 3rd April 2014.
We have been advised by Bristol City Council that construction of the new play area will now begin on April 9th 2014 (rather than April 7th) & will take 6 weeks to complete (weather permitting...) - any further updates will be posted here as soon as we receive them. Anticipation is building......!

Horfield Common Children's Play Area Refurbishment Update 2 - January 2014
Please see below for the update received on 7 January 2014 from the BCC Project manager for the new children's play area on the common. It seems that there have been some delays following completion of the last stage of the consultation in October, but that things are now on track for delivery in April.
Hooray! We look forward to celebrating the opening of the new play area with everyone then!
"We will be appointing the successful tenderer within the next 2-3 weeks. We anticipate construction commencing mid to late March. The new playground should take about 6 weeks to complete. The March start is to accommodate a 6 week equipment manufacture period and to avoid the risk of late inclement winter weather. We have been assured that the funding for this project is secure."
Horfield Common Children's Play Area Refurbishment Update - January 2014
Following the final consultation for the new play area – which presented 5 different designs for local people to feed back on - we are now awaiting confirmation of when work will begin to build the chosen design (see here for further information about the chosen design for the play area). The most recent published timeline for delivery of the play area detailed building beginning in December 2013 and the area opening for use in January 2014; clearly this hasn’t happened so we are following this up, and will let you know as soon as we do when we can expect to see the play area actually beginning to take shape. After years of campaigning, and a number of false starts – we are expecting this to be delivered as soon as possible. The project manager has been in touch with us prior to xmas to advise that work was taking place to revise the Sutcliffe design to take account of the consultation feedback – specifically the key issue raised in relation to the unsuitability of the grass-matt flooring included in it (and the other designs), and we expect to have an update as soon as BCC is back up and running again in the New Year. Watch this space for updates!
Horfield Common Children's Play Area Refurbishment Update - November 2013
Following the closure of the final consultation for the new play area on October 25th, we have now received confirmation that the Sutcliffe design - with some amendments in response to the consultation - is going to be built!
The timeline for this is: Nov 2013 - Appointing contractor & Equipment manufacture Dec 2013 - Construct new play area Jan 2014 - Rospa H&S Inspection Jan 2014 - Open new play area to Public
Join us in January for the opening and the celebrations! Yaye!
Horfield Common Children's Play Area Refurbishment Update - September 2013
Full designs for the new children's play provision will now be available on 23rd September and both BCC amd FOHC will be talking to local people and families about the detail of the plans once they have been produced.
Following earlier delays with the project, the new timeline for delivery is:
Sept/Oct 2013 - Public consultation on tender schemes Oct/Nov 2013 - Appointing contractor & Equipment manufacture lead in time etc Nov/Dec 2013 - Construct new play area Jan 2014 - Rospa H&S Inspection Jan 2014 - Open new play area to Public
We cannot wait to see this long awaited play area open for use & being enjoyed by local children and families!
As long as the project progresses from here without any further delays, this new timeline meets the deadline for spending of this funding, which is reassuring and delivery of the new play area will ensure that Horfield Common's play provision is as good as any other provision in the city - hooray!
Horfield Common Children's Play Area Refurbishment Update...March 2013
Following the Bishopston, Cotham and Redland Neighbourhood Partnership meeting which took place on Monday 25th March 2013, we are waiting for confirmation of how the children's play area refurbishment will now go ahead, and the timescales for this.
At the meeting, a large number of local residents attended to express their views about the proposals to relocate the play area which had been published in January.
As soon as we have more details, we will forward them on, and are looking forwards to seeing progress in delivering these much needed improvements to the children's play provision on the common. Watch this space!
